Fall Reading

Ooooh! I love fall, it’s like back to school but BETTER because so many new books come out and you get to read all the ones you want and skip the ones you don’t! Two of my favorite authors just released new books, and these are at the top my my fall reading list: 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami, and The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides.

I can’t gush enough about Murakami; he is definitely in my top five favorite authors. His latest is HUGE; I recommend reading Kafka on The Shore, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, or one of his slimmer novels such as After Dark to get started. Eugenides also wrote The Virgin Suicides (more famously known in movie form) and Middlesex (a must-read, in my opinion).

Other books I can’t wait to read:

The Cat’s Table, Michael Ondaatje’s new novel

The Sisters Brothers, by Patrick deWitt

The Sense of an Ending, by Julian Barnes, Latest Man Booker Prize Winner

What will you be?

Hi friends! It’s almost Halloween, so I hope everyone has their costume planned out. As of yesterday, mine is complete. I am going super nerdy and dressing up as Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones. She is the conniving queen who speaks the tagline of the series: “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.”

Most importantly, this costume has given me an excuse to add to my collection of animal necklaces. In GoT, Cersei’s house sigil is the Lion, and their colors are red and gold. Sooooo, I picked up this little trinket on Etsy:

 The rest of my costume will have to be a surprise! I would love to know what the rest of you have planned…

Happy on Hayes

OH my! So many new things keep popping up on/around Hayes Street, that I haven’t had time to explore them all yet. I have been out of town the past few weekends (Fly-fishing, Boston, Salt Point, New York) and I am so excited to have a weekend in town to relax and explore my new neighborhood spots. Here’s a run-down of where I need to go.

Suppenkuche’s Biergarten:

{via Daily Candy}

Suppenkuche is one of my favorite restaurants on the block, ok, in the city. Jaegerschnitzel and Erdinger Dark hit the spot every time. One of my goals for this year was to become a regular somewhere, and for a while I had decided it was going to be Suppenkuche. Rusty the bartender and I were tight for a while but life/work/play got in the way, and I no longer go there as often as I could. Enter their new alfresco dining option: the Biergarten, as part of the Hayes Valley Proxy Project. With six beers on tap and an offering of pretzels, brats, and beet salad, I think this will be my new Zeitgeist.

Two Sisters:

This new bar with a unique twist opened on my block last weekend. Officially Two Sisters Bar and Books, this is a place “to linger over a classic cocktail…and share our love of all things literary.”  Sounds perfect to me! My book club is even thinking about holding a meeting there.

Hope everyone has an amazing, relaxing weekend as well.
